KITESURF LOCATION

Paje beach

Kite Centre Zanzibar on Paje Beach is set against a stunning background of the endless blue Indian Ocean. Located on a beautiful white beach alongside an African village, where the pace of life hasn’t changed for over fifty years.

Surfing the waves

The reef is far off-shore, after a lagoon of ample flat water, perfect for beginners and freestylers. The reef itself offers amazing waves for the more experienced kitesurfer.

Pole Pole

The people are curious, friendly and welcoming, but most of all they teach us what we in the fast western world lost a long time ago: Hakuna Matata (no problem in Swahili) and Pole Pole (take it slow). Therefore we believe Zanzibar is a truly unique place in the world. Combine this amazing sport with relaxing and discovering the raw beauty of this relatively untouched island or combine with a safari. We cannot wait to teach you this fantastic sport and share our knowledge of these waters and surroundings with you!

Kitespot Conditions

Paje beach

The kitespot in this tropical paradise can be enjoyed all year round. Despite the occasional rainfall in the rainy season, the island is a breathtaking destination that offers a peaceful retreat and ample opportunities for activities such as diving.

When it comes to kitesurfing, the ideal time to visit is anytime outside of April and November, when the conditions are perfect.

Thanks to the protective reef, the lagoon offers calm, shallow waters that are ideal for both beginners and experts. Explore our diverse range of kitesurf lessons, rentals and activities available on the island and make your next getaway to Zanzibar unforgettable.

  • Wind
  • The best months for beginners are from mid-June until mid-October and the end of December until mid-March. The wind is always side- onshore. From June until October the Kusi blows from the south-east, in December the Kaskasi blows from the north-east.

The best months for experts are from mid-June until mid-September and the end of December until the end of February. While the above listed time-frames are the norm, variations do occur. Therefore we do recommend you to check the wind history on the island.

The average wind speed is around 16 knots, usually increasing towards the end of the day in the late afternoon and early evening. The most commonly used kite sizes are 12, 10 and 9 meters, with some occasional 7 meter kiting, depending on your body weight and the wind speed.

  • Temperature
  • The water temperature is always over 24 degrees Celsius, so your wetsuit can stay at home. Unless you are easily prone to coldness, which can occasionally happen in Africa’s winter months (June-September). If that sounds familiar (easily prone to coldness) we can recommend bringing a shorty or neoprene top. We recommend a 2mm shorty. This will keep you warm and out there for longer (especially when it’s later in the day). If you do not have a shorty yet, you can acquire one in our kitesurf shop.

  • Lagoon
  • In the lagoon, in front of the Kite Centre, you will find a perfect kite heaven. A soft, sandy floor with shallow water for beginners and flat water for freestyle / freeride experts.

The lagoon is split up into 2 parts, separated by a seaweed farming area, which is very easy to see and to pass to the other part of the lagoon.
Booties / shoes can be brought, but are not used a lot, except for learning how to fly kites, and for body dragging in the lagoon. Then they can be handy for protection against the odd sea urchin that escapes from the nearby farming operation.

For the most part the sea floors are sandy and soft. If you’re planning on walking to the reef during low tide, it is definitely recommended to wear water shoes.

  • Reef
  • The reef for surfing waves is 1.5 kilometres off-shore with perfect break. Launch and surf out to the waves with a minimum of three people for safety considerations, or take a surf trip-downwinder with our instructors.

When the tide is halfway to full tide it’s time to explore the amazing waves which can be very good.

The waves on a normal day are around 1-1,5 metres up to 3,5 metres, depending on the swell.

What should I bring?

Bring mostly protection for the sun, like sun-cream, a lycra shirt, a cap or hat, and sun-glasses. It’s also possible to take surf-shoes if you are a beginner. Worried you might forget something? There’s no need for that, because you can also buy all these things in our kitesurf shop.
